Intelligence from Russian Books Captured from the Germans

22 Jul 1946

FOREIGN OFFICE, S.W.1. V/C/13. 6th August, 1946. A point has arisen in regard to the collection of Russian books forming part of the German Foreign Office library, which was found at St. Lambrecht and brought to this country. It was originally arranged that J.I.B. should have the strategical and topographical material and the Foreign Office should select political, historical and other works for its own use. At a recent meeting it was explained, however, that a large part of these books had been acquired by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs by unlawful means and were, in fact, loot taken during the German advance into Russia.
