Scientific and Technical Intelligence Requirements

A volume of secretariat minutes of the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. Secretariat minutes were used to pass documents such as JIC sub-committee and working party reports and intelligence assessments to JIC members. Subjects covered in this file include intelligence requirements on nuclear weapons and atomic energy; British worldwide intelligence organisation and the establishment of Joint Intelligence Bureaux in Commonwealth countries; the changing meaning of the term “Middle East”; the security of British offices in foreign countries; the selection of scientific intelligence priorities in occupied Japan; the exploitation for intelligence purposes of deserters from the Soviet zone of occupation in Germany; the publication of military and economic statistics relating to British war potential; and the repatriation of German internees and refugees.
