Notes on the British War Economy

17 Oct 1942

To all intents and purposes there is no longer any employment that is non-essential certainly no employment which is not directly related to the maintenance of the country as an efficient war producing unit. Employment in the so-called "less essential" industries such as building, distribution, textiles, entertainment, etc. has fallen from 10 million to less than 7 million, and of them many, of course, are working on direct orders for the Armed Forces. With the reductions that have been made, the residual work in these "less essential" occupations is really as essential as any other work.
