Italy Might Possibly Collapse

17 Oct 1942

FROM:Major-General F.H.N. Davidson, D.M.I. THE WAR OFFICE, Whi. 9400 M/55/43 WHITEHALL, S.W.1. Extn.214 MOST SECRET. Secretary, J.I.C. Sub-Committee There is a danger, I think, that we are apt to underestimate the potential resistance, which the Italians are likely to offer in defence of their own country. For instance in J.I.C. 160 the bias given to para. 10 leads to the conclusion that Italy will most probably collapse as the result of a successful "Husky". Also the second sentence of para. 8 on the probable fighting value of the Italians in the defence of their own country is hardly supported by most recent fighting.
