SECRET correspondence had to be kept over a mile from his office. If his staff were expanded these difficulties would have to be overcome and, if necessary, a cover story found. The language problem in his interrogations was fairly satisfactory, except that he had no Russian speaker. His own Chinese, French, and ecclesiastical Latin were of assistance and he was helped by a German interpreter. A Russian linguist was, however, badly needed to cover the White Russians. The White Russians represented a good source of information on particular areas and strangely enough, the Soviet Union appeared to be making no effort to compel their return to Russia.
