TOP SECRET 3. REVIEW OF THE SITUATION ROUND THE SOVIET AND SATELLITE PERIMETER AND OTHER SENSITIVE AREAS (Previous reference: J.I.C.(51)110th Meeting, Minute 5). THE COMMITTEE had their weekly discussion to review the situation round the Soviet and Satellite perimeter, to determine whether there were any fresh indications of Soviet, or Soviet inspired, aggressive moves, and also reviewed the situation in other sensitive areas. SOVIET AND WESTERN SECTOR (See Annex). FAR EAST China and Korea In a statement to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on the 23rd October, Mao Tse Tung reaffirmed the desire for a settlement in Korea on "a just and reasonable basis" without making mention of the 38th Parallel, withdrawal of forces or other contentious conditions; and the fact that recent Chinese publicity had avoided contentious issues might indicate that the Communists were preparing their public for an armistice agreement.
