2. ROLES OF THE S.A.S. IN A FUTURE WAR. SECRET MAJOR GENERAL SHORTT said that he had received from the Director of Land/Air Warfare a memorandum+ on the employment of Special Air Service (S.A.S.) Units. The Director of Land/Air Warfare was engaged in conjunction with the Director of Military Operations and the Director of Military Training, in an examination of the roles of the S.A.S. in a future war and the theatres in which it would be most profitable to employ them. There were two types of operations for which it was considered the S.A.S.
