Description

A volume of meeting minutes of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. The JIC members discussed a vast range of international and domestic issues in their meetings. In this file, subjects documented include indications of Soviet preparedness for war; the threat of a Soviet invasion of Yugoslavia; the possibility of a clandestine introduction of atomic weapons into the United Kingdom; reciprocal security arrangements for service attachés in the UK and the Soviet Bloc; Soviet provision of military supplies for the Chinese communists; the Chinese communist threat to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia; the implications of the invasion of South Korea; the interrogation of Soviet defectors and deserters; and leakages of classified information on public transport.
