SITUATION IN SOUTH CHINA TOP SECRET (Previous reference: J.I.C.(49) 57th Meeting, Minute 1) THE COMMITTEE had a discussion on the latest developments in South China with particular reference to the threat to Hong Kong and their previous report+ to the Chiefs of Staff on this subject. BRIGADIER BOUCHER said that in view of information contained in a recent telegramx dated 20th June, 1949 from the Joint Intelligence Committee, Far East, it appeared necessary to revise our previous estimate of the date when forward elements of Communist regular forces might arrive opposite the New Territories.
