1). SITUATION IN EGYPT. THE SUB-COMMITTEE had before them a Minute* by the Secretary covering a copy of the Foreign Office comments, on an official level, on the reportø by the Joint Intelligence Committee, Middle East, on the situation in Egypt. CAPTAIN LIDDELL, referring to paragraph 9 of the Foreign Office comments, said that at present it was difficult to assess the Communist situation in Egypt, as there was a split in the Party over the question of the policy for appointing Party leaders, and the position would not be clear until this policy had been resolved.
