Military Situation in and Around Trieste

1 Aug 1953

SECRET 6. Potential build-up. An infantry division and a motorised division have been placed at short notice to move if required. After providing for their minimum requirements elsewhere in Italy, it is possible that the Italians could make available two further infantry divisions and one further armoured division. We cannot yet say how quickly these formations could become operational. Air Forces 7. There has been no redeployment of Italian Air Force units. This is not significant since the best units of 56 TAF, equipped with F 84 aircraft, are already on suitable airfields in the north.
