Situation in Afghanistan

SECRET Armed Forces 10. The total strength of the Afghan Army is approximately 43,000 men. The Army is organised into nine divisions and two independent brigades, of which two divisions and one brigade form a mobile reserve at Kabul, and seven divisions and one brigade act as provincial garrisons which are virtually static. An Afghan division in peacetime consists of between two and five thousand men and on mobilisation between seven and nine thousand. Training is under the guidance of a Turkish military mission.
