Russian Development of Axial Flow Engines

1 Jan 1953

SECRET Recent Intelligence on Russian Engines 5. Evidence in recent years has suggested that in 1946-47 Mikulin, an outstanding designer of reciprocating engines, designed, built and tested an axial flow turbo-jet of 6,000 lbs thrust. In the course of flight tests this engine encountered many set backs from component failures and engine malfunctioning, and it is thought that the project was dropped when the British Nene became available to them. Subsequently it appears that Mikulin devoted his attentions to a more powerful engine of 10,000 lbs thrust.
