Strategic Value of the European Satellite Countries

1 Jan 1952

SECRET Armed Forces. 5. There has been a substantial increase in the size of the armies of the Satellite countries, and considerable progress has been made in re-organising them on Soviet lines and in re-equipping them. Their chief weakness lies in their low morale, although the armies of Poland and Bulgaria are probably more reliable than those of the other three countries. 6. With the passage of time, however, it is probable that the most unreliable elements in these armies have disappeared, whilst their equipment and training are continually improving.
