Since the Contractual Agreements between the Three Powers and the Federal German Government and the Treaty setting up the European Defence Community were signed, the East German Government has announced, as a counter-measure to the creation of West German divisions, that East German armed forces will be formed to "protect" the German Democratic Republic against aggression from the West.
