The Likelihood of an Immediate Chinese Attack on Tong-King

1 Jul 1951

TOP SECRET CHINESE CAPABILITIES 6. The present disposition of Chinese forces in the frontier area is shown in general terms in the attached map. Should the Chinese decide to invade Indo-China, the main route is via NANNING-LANGSON-HANOI. The road is capable of supporting a force of 240,000, though some repairs would be necessary. There are various other main routes from China to the TONGKING Delta, including the Red River from LAOKAI-HANOI. These are capable of supporting at least a further 60,000 troops.
