TOP SECRET GUARD ANNEX STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF GIBRALTAR Strategic Importance of Gibraltar to the United Kingdom Gibraltar is strategically important to the United Kingdom because:(a) It controls the Western entrance to the Mediterranean (b) It is at present the only major naval base in the area capable of maintaining forces operating in support of convoys on the United KingdomCape route. (c) It is an important base for maritime air operations in the Atlantic and Western Mediterranean and can provide useful staging facilities, particularly for short range aircraft.
