The Potential Threat to the British Position in Egypt

1 Jul 1951

TOP SECRET ANNEX (Cont'd) 5. Recent events in Persia will have served to encourage nationalist feeling and xenophobia. These must inevitably have a repercussion on the attitude of the Egyptian Government to the detriment of Anglo-Egyptian relations. Egypt can count generally on the sympathies of the Moslem world in her efforts to get rid of the British Canal base and gain control of the Sudan. The assassination of King Abdullah will have removed one of the main restraining influences and may encourage her to hope for greater support, at least from the Arab League.
