The Methods of Target Location and Bombing Likely to be used by the Soviet Air Force

1 Jan 1951

TOP SECRET Bombsight 12. The Russians are known to possess the Norden Bomb Sight. Bombing Tactics. 13. There is no information on the tactics which will be employed by the Soviet Air Force during strategic bombing attacks against this country. Their strategic bomber, the TU.4, is a copy of the B.29 and is therefore presumed to have the same capabilities. CONCLUSION 14. The Soviet Air Force may possess large scale maps of Great Britain and war-time air photographic material which would help air crews in locating vital targets in visual conditions; but at night and in bad weather owing to the lack of radar aids in quantity and the crews to operate them, they are likely to adopt a pathfinder technique using H2S.
