TOP SECRET ANNEX SOVIET SEABORNE THREAT TO THE MIDDLE EAST FROM THE AEGEAN (A map of the Eastern Mediterranean is attached) Introduction In the event of total war with the Soviet Union, we have appreciated that the Soviet drive through Western Europe will probably be accompanied by advances through Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Our strategy, which will be centred on the defence of Western Europe, may require the diversion of Allied Naval Forces from the Eastern to the Western Mediterranean for the support of Allied Land operations.
