Description
A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects documented in this file include the military strength and preparedness for war of the Soviet Union and its satellites; assessments of the possible courses of action that the Soviet Union might take in different areas, including against Yugoslavia and in East Germany; the possibility of a clandestine use of atomic weapons in the United Kingdom; communist influence in different regions of the world, including South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East; and the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
