Soviet Intentions and Capabilities - 1950. Report by the Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Sep 1949

TOP SECRET campaign in Persia and Iraq we have reduced our estimate of the forces that the Russians are likely to employ by nearly one half. This is due to a revision of our ideas on the capacities of the routes concerned and the logistics involved. Our present report gives no definite date by which the attack on the Suez Canal and the Delta would take place. This is due to the fact that it is essential from the Russian point of view to open the L of C through Turkey in order to build up the subsequent thrust through Syria towards the Canal area.
