Implications of the Defection of Nationalist Forces on the Security of Hong Kong. Report by the Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Sep 1949

TOP SECRET ANNEX IMPLICATIONS OF THE DEFECTION OF NATIONALIST FORCES ON THE SECURITY OF HONG KONG. As we have already stated+, there is no evidence that the Chinese Communists are contemplating an armed attack on Hong Kong in the near future. On the contrary, such indications as we have of their intentions show that they are aware of the usefulness to them of a well-established trading centre, and that their immediate policy is aimed at re-opening trade with the Colony. No doubt the strength of the garrison will provide an additional deterrent to aggression.
