Possibility of Russian Armed Action Against Yugoslavia. Report by the Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Sep 1949

TOP SECRET (d) The possibility of a sudden move of large Russian forces from inside the Soviet Union cannot be ruled out, but there are no signs that this is being prepared. At the time it is improbable that news of any such move would reach us until such troops had actually crossed the frontier into Hungary or Roumania, when they would be within approximately 250 miles of the Yugoslav frontier. We cannot, however, even be certain of receiving this news owing to recent restrictions on travel in Satellite countries.
