The Implications of an Austrian Treaty. Report by the Joint Intelligence Committee

1 Jul 1949

TOP SECRET 6. The chief danger to Austria in the period following evecuation would appear to lie not in physical invasion by foreign armed forces but rather in political submersion by Communist ideals from the North, East and South. In the past, Communism in Austria has made no headway and would not do so in the future without external assistance. The Austrians have, however, on their own. little power of resistance and should they find themselves unsupported by the West, might easily accecpt rather then resist Eastern influences.
