1 Jan 1949

TOP SECRET ANNEX SCALE AND NATURE OF RUSSIAN ATTACKS ON THE MIDDLE EAST AND TURKEY 1957 ASSUMPTIONS We have taken into account the assumptions and conclusions of our report on "Soviet Intentions and Capabilities 1956/57"+. THE RUSSIAN AIM 2. As stated in our previous report+, we consider that the primary objects of a Russian campaign in the Middle East, including Greece and Turkey, will be to deny the Middle East oil resources and the Suez Canal area to the Anglo-American Powers, and to add depth to the air defences of South Russia.
