COPY. (AS 6630/59/51) ARMS SALES TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. A. The Present State of Dominican Armaments 1. In September, 1947, the Dominican Republic, with a population of some two million, were maintaining, according to our information, the following armed services:Navy: 8 corvettes, 1 frigate Army: 28 Infantry Companies, (approximately 7,000 men). Air Force: 20 trainers, 8 miscellaneous aircraft and 4 or 5 Mustang fighters. 2. During 1948, as a result of a continued fear of invasion from Cuba, Venezuela or one (or more) of the Central American Republics where there are Governments and other elements opposed to President Trujillo's regime, the Dominican Government have been purchasing large quantities of arms wherever they have been able to acquire them.
