American Intelligence Appreciations

1 May 1948

Comments by Joint Intelligence Committee, London, on Central Intelligence Agency Reports. S.R. 21 INDIA AND PAKISTAN Summary: end of 3rd paragraph. 1. We do not agree that the Communist Party has a "controlling position in the Indian Labour movement." Section II Economic situation page II 1 first two paras 2. There is a suggestion here that Indian economy has been retarded by being subjected to "development as a Colonial area." During the last 100 years, British rule in India has provided the impetus for the development, not only of the irrigation systems on which all India's agriculture is founded, but of great industries, of which jute and cottontextiles are good examples.
